Alex Hare is a director/writer of theater and film, focusing in particular on original musicals.
Recent directing: We Take Pictures (short film), Topdog/Underdog (StageCenter Louisiana), Everyday Charlie (The Tank), The Judgment of Quintus (comedic video game by Greg Edwards, due out in 2024).
His microbudget movie CAPRICORN 29 premiered online in 2021 and was praised by NY Magazine, the New Yorker, and more. Co-written with Julia Izumi, it featured original songs by Laura Galindo, Daniel & Patrick Lazour, Stompcat, and Storm Thomas.
Alex is currently developing several new musicals, including A Burning Church with collaborators Zhailon Levingston and Nehemiah Luckett. The trio have worked on the show through New Ohio/IRT’s Archive Residency, Musical Theatre Factory’s MAKERS cohort, Goodspeed’s JMF Writers Grove, and fellowship with A Blade of Grass.
In 2020, Alex received the SDC Foundation’s Charles Abbott Fellowship for young musical theatre directors. Assistant credits include School of Rock and Side Show (Broadway).
For four years, Alex was the associate artistic director of Corkscrew Theater Festival, an NYC-based festival of new plays. He has frequently assisted director Bill Condon on film and stage projects. Columbia University alum.
He’s motivated (ok, I’m motivated, no one else is behind this Squarespace page…) to create networks of artists mutually supporting each other in order to build a future that isn’t dictated by concentrated power held by the few. So, don’t hesitate to reach out!

CAPRICORN 29 (INTERNET-FILM)
On the eve of her 29th birthday, a Very Online millennial stumbles upon a curious conspiracy theory: the powers-that-be have initiated a new capitalist plot to eliminate unsuccessful 30 year olds.
Unfolding in the form of a hallucinatory YouTube wormhole, CAPRICORN 29 is a film (made for the internet) that wrestles with the tyranny of age-based milestones.
“[A] cleverly constructed video production….we are in a golden age of people explaining to those of us online what it’s like to be online. And it’s in this way that I think Capricorn 29 is actually brilliant….[what’s real] is the way every maker on the team handles and embroiders the digital fabric.” - Helen Shaw, Vulture/NY Magazine
“The innovative work of these first-rate talents is funny, insightful, and masterful; I can’t recommend it highly enough and I can’t wait to see what they do next.” - DC Metro Theater Arts
